Why Size Matters More Than Ever

Platforms crop, compress, and downscale images that don't match their native dimensions. Using the wrong size means:

  • Cropping — faces, text, and key details get cut off
  • Compression artifacts — platforms re-encode images not uploaded at native resolution, visibly reducing quality
  • Feed display issues — wrong aspect ratio forces letterboxing or cropping in the feed

Uploading at the exact correct size gives you full control over what the viewer sees.

Instagram

Instagram has the most format variety of any platform. Each format has its own ideal dimensions.

Feed Posts

FormatDimensionsAspect ratio
Square1080×1080 px1:1
Portrait (recommended)1080×1350 px4:5
Landscape1080×566 px1.91:1

Portrait (4:5) is the best-performing feed format. It takes up the most vertical space in the feed — which means more scroll real estate and more attention.

Minimum width: 320 px. Maximum width: 1440 px (Instagram downscales above this).

Instagram Reels

SpecValue
Dimensions1080×1920 px
Aspect ratio9:16
Minimum dimensions500×888 px
Video length3 seconds – 3 minutes
Max file size4 GB
Recommended formatsMP4, MOV

Safe zone: The bottom ~35% of the screen is covered by the caption, username, and action buttons. Keep faces and important text in the top 60% of the frame.

Instagram Stories

SpecValue
Dimensions1080×1920 px
Aspect ratio9:16
Image file sizeUp to 30 MB
Video lengthUp to 60 seconds
Recommended formatsMP4, MOV (video), JPG, PNG (image)

Stories and Reels share the same canvas size. Safe zone rules apply: keep key content 250 px from the top and 400 px from the bottom.

Instagram Carousels

Same dimensions as single feed posts — 1080×1080, 1080×1350, or 1080×566. All slides must use the same aspect ratio. You can include up to 20 slides per carousel.

Instagram Profile Photo

Displays at 110×110 px in the feed. Upload at 320×320 px minimum for crisp quality across all devices.

TikTok

TikTok is a vertical-first platform. Every format is 9:16.

TikTok Videos

SpecValue
Dimensions1080×1920 px
Aspect ratio9:16 (also supports 1:1 and 16:9, but 9:16 performs best)
Video length3 seconds – 10 minutes (60 minutes for select accounts)
Max file size287.6 MB (mobile), 500 MB (desktop)
Recommended formatsMP4, MOV
Recommended frame rate30fps or 60fps
BitrateAt least 516 kbps

Safe zone: TikTok overlays are heavy. The bottom 30% is covered by caption, username, and buttons. The right side has the action bar. Keep faces centered and key text in the middle 40% of the screen.

TikTok Profile Photo

Displays as a circle. Upload at 200×200 px minimum — higher resolution recommended.

YouTube

YouTube supports the widest range of resolutions because content lives permanently and is often watched on large screens.

YouTube Videos

ResolutionDimensionsQuality
4K (Ultra HD)3840×2160 pxBest
1440p (2K)2560×1440 pxExcellent
1080p (Full HD)1920×1080 pxRecommended minimum
720p (HD)1280×720 pxAcceptable

Aspect ratio: 16:9 for standard videos. YouTube adds black bars to videos with other ratios.

Max file size: 128 GB. Max length: 12 hours.

Recommended formats: MP4 (H.264 codec), MOV, AVI.

YouTube Shorts

SpecValue
Dimensions1080×1920 px
Aspect ratio9:16
Max length3 minutes
Max file size256 MB
Recommended formatsMP4, MOV

YouTube Thumbnails

Thumbnails are one of the highest-leverage design assets on YouTube — they directly affect click-through rate.

SpecValue
Dimensions1280×720 px
Aspect ratio16:9
Max file size2 MB
FormatsJPG, GIF, PNG, BMP

Design thumbnails with bold, high-contrast text and a clear focal point. They display at a small size in search results — make sure they're readable at 200×113 px.

YouTube Channel Art (Banner)

SpecValue
Dimensions2560×1440 px
Safe zone for all devices1546×423 px (centered)
Max file size6 MB

The banner displays differently across devices. Design your key content — logo, tagline — within the central 1546×423 px safe zone.

YouTube Profile Photo

Upload at 800×800 px. Displays as a circle in most contexts.

Facebook Event Cover Photo

1920×1005 px. Aspect ratio approximately 1.91:1.

Pinterest

Pinterest is portrait-dominant. Vertical pins take up more feed space and consistently outperform other orientations.

Pinterest Pins

FormatDimensionsAspect ratioNotes

Square1000×1000 px1:1Acceptable, less prominent
Long pin1000×2100 px1:2.1Pinterest clips to 1:2.1 max in feed
Story pin1080×1920 px9:16Full-screen format

Avoid going longer than 1:2.1. Pinterest crops anything taller in the feed, hiding the bottom of your content.

Max file size: 20 MB for images. Formats: JPG, PNG, GIF (static).

Aspect Ratios Cheat Sheet

If you work in ratios rather than pixel dimensions:

RatioNameWhere it's used
9:16Vertical full-screenTikTok, Reels, Stories, Shorts — the universal vertical format
4:5PortraitInstagram feed best-performer — taller than square, not full screen
1:1SquareUniversal — works everywhere
16:9Landscape widescreenYouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn articles
1.91:1LandscapeFacebook feed, link previews
2:3Pinterest portraitPinterest standard pin

Universal Design Rules for Every Platform

1. Design for mobile first. Over 90% of social media is consumed on phones. Preview every design on a phone screen before posting.

2. Keep text in the safe zone. Every vertical-format platform has overlays — captions, usernames, buttons — covering the top and bottom of the screen. Keep your key content in the central 60% of the frame.

3. Use the native resolution. Don't upscale a small image to fill the required dimensions. Upscaling doesn't add resolution — it just blurs. Start at the correct size.

4. Export at 72 dpi for images. Screen resolution is 72 dpi. Designing at 300 dpi (print resolution) creates unnecessarily large files that get compressed more aggressively by platforms.

5. Use sRGB color profile. Social platforms display sRGB. If you design in Adobe RGB or P3, colors may shift on upload.

6. Check your file size limits. Large files take longer to upload and may be rejected. Compress images with a tool like Squoosh or TinyPNG before uploading.

File Format Guide

FormatBest forNotes
JPGPhotos, complex imagesSmaller file size, slight quality loss
PNGGraphics with text, logos, transparent backgroundsLarger file, no quality loss
GIFShort animationsLimited to 256 colors, large file sizes — avoid if MP4 is an option
MP4All videoUniversal format, best compression
MOVVideo (Apple native)Larger than MP4, but accepted everywhere
WebPImages (where supported)Better compression than JPG/PNG, not yet accepted on all platforms

For video, always use MP4 with H.264 encoding. This gives you the widest compatibility and best quality-to-file-size ratio across every platform.

Posting Across Platforms Without Resizing Every Time

The most time-consuming part of a multi-platform strategy isn't creating content — it's adapting it for every format.

The practical workflow:

  1. Design at 1080×1920 px (9:16) — this is the universal vertical canvas. It works for TikTok, Reels, Stories, and Shorts.
  2. Export a 1080×1350 px (4:5) crop — for Instagram feed and Facebook feed.
  3. Export a 1080×1080 px (1:1) crop — for anywhere square format is needed.

Three exports from one design covers almost every platform.

When you're scheduling across TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, Threads, and Pinterest, PostLink lets you upload once and post everywhere — without jumping between apps or reformatting separately for each platform.
