The Short Answer
To turn off active status on Instagram, go to Settings and privacy → Messages and story replies → Show activity status → OFF.

Instagram's active status (also called "online status" or "last seen") shows a green dot or "Active X minutes ago" next to your profile photo in Direct Messages. When active status is on, people you've messaged or followed can see:

How to Hide Online Status on Instagram (Same Setting)
"Online status," "last seen," "activity status," and "active status" all refer to the same setting on Instagram. There is no separate "online status" toggle — turning off "Show activity status" hides everything:
- The green "active now" dot disappears
- "Active X minutes/hours ago" no longer shows
- "Active today" no longer shows

What Happens When You Turn Off Active Status?

How to Turn Off Read Receipts on Instagram
Active status and read receipts are different settings:

Instagram does not let you fully disable read receipts for regular DMs. Once you open a message, the sender sees "Seen."
Workarounds:
- Read from notifications — preview the message in your notification shade or lock screen without opening the Instagram app. The message won't be marked as "Seen"
- Use Airplane Mode — turn on Airplane Mode, open Instagram, read the message, then force-close the app before turning Airplane Mode off. The "Seen" status won't sync until you reopen the conversation
- Restrict the account — if you Restrict someone, they can't see when you've read their messages. Go to their profile → three dots → Restrict
Can You Hide Active Status from Specific People?
No. Instagram's activity status is all-or-nothing — you can't show it to some people and hide it from others. When you turn it off, it's hidden from everyone, and you lose the ability to see anyone else's status.
If you want to avoid a specific person seeing you online without turning off status for everyone, your options are:
- Restrict them — they won't see your read receipts, and their messages go to a separate requests folder
- Block them — they can't see your profile, messages, or status at all
- Mute their messages — doesn't hide your status, but reduces your interaction visibility
Does Turning Off Active Status Affect the Instagram Algorithm?
No. Your activity status has zero impact on how Instagram ranks or distributes your content. The algorithm uses engagement signals (likes, comments, shares, saves, watch time) — not whether your green dot is visible.
You can safely turn off activity status without any impact on your reach, followers, or post performance.
How to Check if Your Active Status Is Off
To verify your setting:
- Go to Settings and privacy → Messages and story replies → Show activity status
- The toggle should be gray/off
You can also ask a friend to check their DMs — your name should no longer show "Active now" or "Active X ago" next to it.
FAQ
Can businesses turn off active status?
Yes. Business and Creator accounts can turn off activity status using the same steps. There's no requirement for business accounts to keep it on.
Does active status show on Instagram Threads?
Threads has its own activity status setting, separate from Instagram. Turning it off on Instagram does not turn it off on Threads. You need to disable it separately in the Threads app: Settings → Privacy → Activity status → OFF.
Does active status work in group chats?
Yes. If your activity status is on, members of group chats you're in can see when you're active. Turning it off hides your status in group chats as well.
Will my followers know I turned off active status?
No. Instagram doesn't send any notification. Your status simply stops appearing. If someone checks, they'll see no activity status at all — they won't know if you turned it off or if you just haven't been online.
