“Is it taken?” opens that profile on Instagram. If Instagram says the page isn’t available, the name is probably free — Instagram’s own Edit profile screen gives the final answer when you try to save it.
Instagram username rules
Instagram rejects a username before it ever checks whether it’s free if it breaks one of these rules, so it’s worth knowing them before you fall for a name:
- Up to 30 characters.
- Only letters, numbers, periods (.) and underscores (_).
- No period at the start or the end, and never two periods in a row.
- No spaces, hyphens, emoji or accented letters.
- Capital letters are fine to type, but usernames are stored in lowercase.
Type a name with a space or an accent into the box above and the generator tells you which rule it breaks and builds ideas from the version Instagram would accept.
Aesthetic username ideas
Short, lowercase, one soft word and a period between the parts. These are examples to adapt — swap in your own name or initials.
Cute username ideas
Food, small animals and sweet words, kept short enough to fit next to a profile photo.
Username ideas with your name
Your name plus what you post is the easiest username to remember and to find in search. Doubling the last letter (miaa) or adding a word (mia.daily) are the usual ways around a name that’s already taken.
How to check if an Instagram username is taken
Open instagram.com/the-name in a browser. A profile means it’s taken; “Sorry, this page isn’t available” usually means it’s free, although Instagram also holds back names of disabled and recently changed accounts. The only certain test is to type it into Edit profile → Username in the app: Instagram tells you straight away if it’s unavailable.
How to change your Instagram username
- Open your profile and tap Edit profile.
- Tap Username and type the new one.
- Tap Done (or the check mark) to save.
Your followers, posts and the numeric account ID stay the same — only the @handle and your profile link change, so update the link anywhere you’ve shared it. The Name field above your bio is separate: it can hold spaces and styled fonts, and it’s searchable too. Instagram’s own steps are in the Instagram Help Center.
Questions
What characters can an Instagram username have?
Letters, numbers, periods and underscores, up to 30 characters. A username can’t start or end with a period or have two periods in a row, and spaces, hyphens, emoji and accented letters are not accepted. The generator only suggests names that follow these rules.
Can this tool tell me if a username is available?
Not directly — Instagram doesn’t offer a public way to check. Each idea has an “Is it taken?” link that opens instagram.com/that-name: if Instagram says the page isn’t available, the name is probably free. Instagram’s Edit profile screen gives the final answer when you try to save it.
Can I use fancy fonts in my Instagram username?
No. The username only takes plain letters, numbers, periods and underscores. Styled letters work in the Name field and in your bio — use the Instagram font generator for those.
How do I make an aesthetic Instagram username?
Keep it short and lowercase, pair your name with one soft word (luna, petal, diary, skies), and separate the parts with a period. One period reads cleaner than several underscores or numbers.
Is the username generator free?
Yes. It runs in your browser, has no limit and needs no account.
