Can You Hide Your Follower Count on Instagram?
Partially. Instagram doesn't have a direct toggle to hide your follower number from your profile — but switching to a private account effectively restricts who can see your full profile information including followers and following lists.
However, there are several things you can control. Here's what's possible.
How to Hide Your Followers List (Private Account)
The most effective way to prevent others from browsing your followers list is to make your account private.
On mobile:
- Go to your Profile → tap ☰ (menu) → Settings and privacy
- Tap Account privacy
- Toggle Private account to ON
When your account is private:
- Only approved followers can see your posts, followers list, and following list
- People who don't follow you see only your name, bio, and profile photo
- Your follower count is still visible to non-followers on your profile header
On desktop:
- Go to instagram.com → click your profile photo → Settings
- Click Privacy and security
- Under Account privacy, check Private account
How to Hide Your Following List
Instagram doesn't let you hide your following list separately from your followers list on a public account. Both lists are visible to everyone on a public account and hidden (to non-followers) on a private account.
The only way to hide who you follow is to make your account private.
How to Hide Like Counts on Your Posts
Instagram allows you to hide like counts on your own posts — so followers see the post but not the number of likes.
To hide likes on a post before publishing:
- In the post creation flow, tap Advanced settings
- Toggle Hide like and view counts on this post to ON
To hide likes on an already-published post:
- Tap the three dots (...) on the post
- Tap Hide like count
This is separate from hiding followers — it affects post-level visibility, not your profile.
How to Remove Followers Without Blocking
If you want to remove specific followers from a public account without blocking them:
- Go to your Profile → tap Followers
- Find the follower you want to remove
- Tap the three dots (...) next to their name
- Tap Remove
They won't be notified. They can still follow you again if they choose.
How to Turn Off Active Status (Separate from Followers)
If you want to hide when you're online rather than your followers:
- Go to Settings and privacy → Messages and story replies
- Tap Show activity status
- Toggle it OFF
This hides the green "Active now" dot from your profile in DMs.
What You CAN and CAN'T Hide on Instagram
| Feature | Can you hide it? | How |
|---|---|---|
| Followers list | ✅ (from non-followers) | Switch to private account |
| Following list | ✅ (from non-followers) | Switch to private account |
| Follower count number | ❌ Not directly | Private account hides lists, not the number |
| Like counts on posts | ✅ | Advanced settings per post |
| Active status | ✅ | Settings → Messages → Show activity status |
| Story views | ❌ | Not possible |
| Who viewed your profile | ❌ | Not possible (only Stories show viewers) |
Summary
To hide your followers on Instagram:
- Hide the followers list: Switch to a private account
- Remove specific followers: Followers list → three dots → Remove
- Hide like counts: Advanced settings before posting, or three dots after posting
Instagram doesn't offer a way to hide the raw follower number shown on your profile header without making your account private. For most creators, that trade-off isn't worth it — a public account with scheduling tools like PostLink to keep content consistent usually grows faster than a private one.
