YouTube thumbnail downloader

Paste any YouTube video or Shorts link and download its thumbnail in every size YouTube made — up to 1280×720 HD — straight from YouTube’s image server.

The five sizes YouTube keeps for every video

When a video is uploaded, YouTube stores its thumbnail several times over, each copy sized for a different place on the site. They all live at the same address pattern,i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/size.jpg, which is what this tool reads:

  • maxresdefault — 1280×720. The full HD original. Only exists for HD videos or custom thumbnails uploaded in HD.
  • sddefault — 640×480. 4:3 with black bars top and bottom; the best copy when maxres is missing.
  • hqdefault — 480×360. Also 4:3 and letterboxed. Present for every video, which makes it the safe choice for embeds.
  • mqdefault — 320×180. True 16:9 without bars, the size used in search results and the sidebar.
  • default — 120×90. The small preview used in playlists.

How the downloader works

The link is reduced to its 11-character video ID — the part after v=, after youtu.be/ or after /shorts/. Each size is then loaded from YouTube directly. When YouTube has no file for a size it answers with a 120×90 grey placeholder rather than an error, so the tool measures every image and greys out the sizes that came back as placeholders. Download saves the real file under the video ID and size name; if your browser blocks the direct save, the image opens in a new tab where you can save it by hand.

Using a thumbnail as a reference

The most common reason to pull a thumbnail is to study what works in a niche: the text size, the face, the colour that stands out in a grid. Put a competitor’s next to your own draft in the thumbnail tester and look at both at sidebar size — that is where the click is won or lost, and it is very different from how a thumbnail looks full screen in an editor.

Questions

How do I download a YouTube thumbnail?

Copy the video link from the address bar or the Share button, paste it above and press Get thumbnails. Every size YouTube generated appears with a Download button; the largest one is Max resolution, 1280×720.

Why is the HD (maxresdefault) thumbnail missing?

YouTube only creates the 1280×720 file when the video is HD or the creator uploaded a custom thumbnail in HD. Older and low-resolution uploads stop at Standard (640×480), and the downloader marks the missing size instead of saving a grey placeholder.

Does it work with YouTube Shorts?

Yes. Paste a youtube.com/shorts/ link. Shorts thumbnails are stored at the same 16:9 sizes as regular videos, cropped from the vertical frame.

Can I use a downloaded thumbnail in my own video?

A thumbnail is the creator’s work and is covered by copyright like the video. Downloading one for reference, a review or to back up your own channel is common; reusing someone else’s thumbnail as yours is not allowed without permission.

Is this YouTube thumbnail downloader free?

Yes, with no limit and no account. The images load directly from YouTube’s image server (i.ytimg.com) in your browser; nothing passes through our servers.
