- By followers (your size)
- Low under 2.5% · typical 5% · strong 10%+
Every interaction counts once here, the convention most media kits use. Ranges are rough benchmarks for single videos — compare against your own last ten videos before reading too much into one number.
The two formulas
Both start from the same total — every like, comment, share and save on the video:
- By views: (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ views × 100.
- By followers: (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ followers × 100.
With the example above — 4,200 likes, 120 comments, 90 shares and 300 saves on 60,000 views — that is 4,710 interactions, or 7.85% by views, which is a good rate. Against 40,000 followers the same video reads 11.78%.
Why views are the fairer denominator on TikTok
On Instagram most of a post’s audience follows the account, so followers are a fair baseline. TikTok is different: the For You feed puts videos in front of people who have never seen you, and a single video can be watched by ten times your follower count — or by a tenth of it. The follower-based rate then mostly measures how far the video travelled. The view-based rate measures how the people who actually watched it reacted, which is the question a brand or you are really asking.
What moves the rate
- Shares and saves are the strongest signals. A like costs a tap; a share puts the viewer’s name behind the video and a save means they plan to come back. Videos that teach something or that people want to send to one friend collect both.
- Rates fall as views climb. A video that escapes your usual audience is watched by people with less reason to engage, so a viral video with a lower rate is normal, not a failure.
- Compare like with like. Judge a video against your own last ten, not against a single viral outlier. To price the attention once you know your rate, use the TikTok money calculator.
Questions
How do you calculate engagement rate on TikTok?
Add a video’s likes, comments, shares and saves, divide by its views and multiply by 100. That is engagement rate by views. Dividing the same total by followers instead gives engagement rate by followers.
What is a good engagement rate on TikTok?
By views, 3–6% is average, 6–10% is good and above 10% is excellent. By followers the numbers swing much more, because a video that reaches the For You feed can get far more views than you have followers.
Should I use views or followers?
Views, for TikTok. Most views come from the For You feed, from people who do not follow you, so dividing by followers can show 30% on a viral video and 1% on a quiet one. Brands increasingly ask for the view-based rate for exactly that reason.
Where do I find these numbers?
Open the video, tap the three dots or More, then Analytics. Views, likes, comments, shares and saves (shown as favorites) are all on the overview tab; followers are on your profile.
Is the calculator free?
Yes. It runs in your browser with no limit and no account.
