What Does Tagging on Facebook Do?
When you tag someone in a Facebook post:
- The person gets a notification
- The post may appear on their timeline (depending on their privacy settings)
- Their name appears as a clickable link in your post
- Their friends may see the post in their News Feed
Tagging is one of the quickest ways to increase the reach of a post — each tagged person's network potentially sees it.
How to Tag Someone in a Facebook Post (Text Post)
On mobile (iOS or Android):
- Start creating a new post (tap What's on your mind?)
- In the text area, type @ followed by the person's name
- A dropdown list appears with matching friends and Pages
- Tap the correct person to tag them
- Their name turns into a blue clickable link
- Finish writing and tap Post
On desktop:
- Click What's on your mind? to open the post composer
- Type @ and start typing the person's name
- Select the correct person from the dropdown
- Click Post
You can also click the Tag People icon (person with a + sign) in the post composer toolbar instead of typing @.
How to Tag Someone in a Facebook Photo
On mobile:
- Upload your photo to a post or go to an existing photo
- Tap Tag photo or tap the person icon that appears on the photo
- Tap the person's face in the photo
- Type their name in the search field that appears
- Select the correct person
- Tap Done
On desktop:
- Open the photo
- Click Tag Photo below the image
- Click on a face in the photo
- Type the person's name and select from the dropdown
- Click Done Tagging
Note: The tagged person receives a notification and can remove the tag on themselves if they want.
How to Tag a Facebook Page in a Post
The process is the same as tagging a person — type @ followed by the Page name:
- In the post composer, type @[Page name]
- Select the correct Page from the dropdown
- The Page name becomes a clickable link
This works for business Pages, public figures, brands, and any public Facebook Page.
How to Tag Someone in a Facebook Comment
- Find the post and click Comment
- In the comment field, type @ and the person's name
- Select them from the dropdown
- Post the comment
You can tag anyone in a comment — not just your friends — as long as their profile or Page is public.
How to Tag Someone in a Post After Publishing
Forgot to tag someone? You can add tags to an existing post.
On mobile:
- Find your post
- Tap the three dots (...) → Edit post
- In the text, type @ and add the tag
- Tap Save
On desktop:
- Click the three dots (...) on the post
- Click Edit post
- Add the @ tag in the text
- Click Save
You can also add photo tags by editing the photo itself after publishing.
Why Can't I Tag Someone in My Facebook Post?
Common reasons tagging doesn't work:
| Issue | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Person doesn't appear in dropdown | Their privacy settings limit who can tag them | Ask them to adjust Timeline and Tagging settings |
| Tag removed automatically | The tagged person declined the tag | You'll need their permission |
| Can't tag in a group post | Some groups restrict tagging | Group admin policy — no workaround |
| Page won't appear in suggestions | Page name typed incorrectly | Try the full exact Page name |
How to Remove a Tag from a Facebook Post
If you've been tagged and want to remove it:
- Find the post with your tag
- Tap the three dots (...)
- Tap Remove tag
This removes your name from the post. The post itself stays visible, but your name is no longer linked.
Summary
To tag someone in a Facebook post:
- Type @ followed by their name in the composer or comment field
- Select them from the dropdown that appears
- For photos, use the Tag Photo button and click on faces
