Can You Repost on Instagram?
Instagram has native repost functionality โ but only for Stories. For feed posts and Reels, you need to use Instagram's "Add to your story" feature or a third-party app.
Here's how to repost every type of Instagram content.
How to Repost an Instagram Story
If someone tags you in their Story, you can reshare it directly to your own Story.
When you're tagged:
- You'll receive a DM notification: "[Name] mentioned you in their story"
- Tap Add to your story
- Customize the layout (resize, add text, stickers) if desired
- Tap Your Story to share
If you're not tagged but want to repost a public Story: Instagram doesn't have a native "repost Story" button for content that doesn't tag you. You'd need to use a third-party tool or screenshot it (no notification is sent for screenshots of Stories).
How to Repost an Instagram Feed Post to Your Story
This is Instagram's most flexible built-in repost feature โ you can share any public post to your Story.
- Find the post you want to repost in your feed or on someone's profile
- Tap the paper plane (Share) icon below the post
- Tap Add to your story
- The post appears as a sticker you can resize and reposition
- Add text or other elements as desired
- Tap Your Story or Close Friends
The original creator is automatically credited on the repost sticker. Viewers can tap it to go to the original post.
Note: This only works for public accounts. Posts from private accounts don't show the "Add to your story" option.
How to Repost a Reel to Your Story
Identical to reposting a feed post:
- Open the Reel
- Tap the Share (paper plane) icon
- Tap Add to your story
- Resize or reposition the Reel preview sticker
- Share to your Story
The Reel plays as a preview in your Story, and viewers can tap to watch the full Reel.
How to Repost a Feed Post to Your Feed (Grid)
Instagram does not have a native button to repost someone's photo or video directly to your feed grid. Options:
Option 1 โ Repost apps
Apps like Repost for Instagram or Reposta let you copy the post link and repost it to your grid with credit. Always give clear credit to the original creator.
Option 2 โ Screenshot/screen record + manual post
Save the content, upload it as a new post, and tag the original creator in both the caption and as a photo tag. This is standard practice for user-generated content (UGC) reposts.
Option 3 โ Collab posts (best option)
If you have a relationship with the creator, use Instagram's Collab feature. The original creator creates the post and invites you as a collaborator โ it then appears on both your profiles with shared engagement (same likes, comments, view count).
To set up a Collab: when creating a post, tap Tag people โ Invite Collaborator โ search for the person.
How to Unrepost on Instagram
If you reposted something to your Story and want to remove it:
- Go to your Story (tap your profile circle)
- Find the reposted content
- Tap More (...) โ Delete
For content reposted to your feed via a third-party app, just delete it as you would any post.
Instagram Repost Etiquette
A few things to keep in mind when reposting:
- Always credit the original creator โ tag them in the caption and/or as a photo tag
- Ask permission for feed reposts โ especially for commercial use or if the creator hasn't explicitly allowed sharing
- Don't remove watermarks โ if a creator has watermarked their content, don't crop it out before reposting
- Use UGC strategically โ brands often run campaigns specifically to encourage customers to create content they can then repost
