Why Turn Off Comments on a Facebook Post?
There are plenty of good reasons to disable comments on a specific post:
- You're sharing information that doesn't require feedback (announcements, receipts, confirmations)
- You want to prevent spam or irrelevant debate
- You're running a campaign and want engagement only through reactions or shares
- The topic is sensitive and you want to control the conversation
Facebook lets you turn off comments on posts from Pages and on personal profile posts. Here's how to do it on both.
How to Turn Off Comments on a Facebook Page Post
On mobile (iOS or Android):
- Go to your Facebook Page
- Find the post you want to restrict
- Tap the three dots (...) in the top right corner of the post
- Tap Turn off commenting
That's it. A message appears confirming that commenting has been turned off. Existing comments remain visible but no new ones can be added.
To re-enable commenting: Tap the three dots again → Turn on commenting
On desktop:
- Go to your Page and find the post
- Click the three dots (...) in the top right of the post
- Click Turn off commenting
How to Disable Comments Before Publishing a Facebook Post
You can turn off comments before a post goes live — you don't have to publish first and then disable.
On desktop (Pages):
- Start creating your post in the Page composer
- Click the three dots (...) at the bottom of the post creation window or look for Post settings / Comment settings depending on your Page type
- Select Turn off commenting
- Publish the post
Note: The pre-publish commenting option is more reliably available on Pages than on personal profiles.
How to Turn Off Comments on a Personal Profile Post
For personal Facebook profiles, the process is slightly different.
On mobile:
- Find the post on your profile
- Tap the three dots (...) in the top right corner
- Tap Edit audience or look for Comment controls (this option appears for some post types)
- Select Who can comment on your post?
- Choose Friends or No one to restrict commenting
Note: The "Turn off commenting" option for personal profiles may be labeled differently — look for "Who can comment on your post?" in the post settings.
On desktop:
- Go to the post on your profile
- Click the three dots (...)
- Look for Edit privacy or Edit audience
- Under comment controls, select No one or Friends
How to Turn Off Comments on a Facebook Group Post
If you're a group admin or moderator, you can disable comments on any post within the group.
On mobile:
- Open the group and find the post
- Tap the three dots (...) on the post
- Tap Turn off commenting
On desktop:
- Find the post in the group
- Click ...
- Click Turn off commenting
Regular group members cannot disable comments on their own posts — this is an admin/moderator privilege only.
How to Turn Off Comments on a Facebook Live
During a Facebook Live, you can disable comments in real time:
- While live, look for the comments icon or settings icon on the Live interface
- Tap Turn off comments
This is useful for one-way announcements where viewer interaction isn't needed.
